Evergreen Merce
Merce Cunningham, the Pontiff of contemporary dance, recently
turned ninety and celebrated his birthday with the “in” crowd at
the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the theatre where he made his
first New York appearance in 1954. How better to celebrate
than by presenting a new work? Time does not seem to take its
toll on this ever-amazing, untiring choreographer who has
shown himself to be, yet again, choreography’s “eternal youth”

Summer Festival
Once again, the News section of this year’s Summer edition of
Ballet2000 is devoted to the various summer festivals which,
for obvious reasons connected to tourism, are more numerous in
Italy and the south of France, than in other European
countries. The programmes are not always that attractive and
(classical or modern) balletlovers may be in for a
disappointment; nevertheless, if one chooses selectively and is
ready, willing and able to travel, one can manage to put together a
quality “dance tour”. Here, then, are the details of which we are
aware as we go to print – but readers should bear in mind that
summer festivals do not always finalize their programmes
sufficiently ahead of time so as to give adequate notice to monthly
magazines such as ours. Check out the “wheres and whens” and
the complete perfomance listings on our Calendar
