Nureyev the Choreographer: a Comedy of Errors

La Scala has recently revived “Don Quixote”, the Paris Opéra
is reviving “La Bayadère” in May, and theatres all over the
world have Rudolf Nureyev’s “versions” of classical ballets in
their repertoires. But it is all one big and convenient “quid pro
quo”. The great dancer was not a choreographer and “his”
ballets are the Kirov classics, simply embellished scenically –
and ruined choreographically. Experts are aware of this and
dancers put up with it, yet theatres continue to exploit
the resounding name of Nureyev
